John’s dog was a bad dog.	سگ جان سگ بدی بود.
He bit people frequently.	او مرتباً مردم را گاز می‌گرفت.
John was concerned about this.	جان از این بابت نگران بود.
It was not an appropriate way for a dog to behave.	این رفتار مناسبی برای یک سگ نبود.
His friends in the village always expected the dog to bite them.	دوستانش در روستا همیشه انتظار داشتند که سگ آن‌ها را گاز بگیرد.
The news about John’s dog spread through the village.	خبر درباره‌ی سگ جان در روستا پخش شد.
None of the people wanted to go to John’s house.	هیچ‌یک از مردم نمی‌خواست به خانه‌ی جان برود.
John tried to instruct the dog to behave, but it never worked.	جان سعی کرد به سگ بیاموزد که چگونه رفتار کند، اما هرگز اثر نکرد.
He tried to be patient and teach the dog to be calm.	او سعی کرد صبور باشد و به سگش بیاموزد که آرام باشد.
That also didn’t work.	آن هم اثر نکرد.
John didn’t want to punish the dog.	جان نمی‌خواست سگ را تنبیه کند.
“How will I stop my dog’s bad habit?” John asked himself.	جان از خودش پرسید: «چطوری رفتار بد سگم رو متوقف کنم؟»
John’s friend came to talk to him about the issue.	دوست جان آمد تا درباره‌ی این مسئله با او صحبت کند.
During their important meeting, his friend said, “The people in the village asked me to represent them.”	در طول ملاقات مهم آن‌ها، دوستش گفت: «مردم روستا از من خواستن تا نماینده‌ی اونا باشم.»
“We want your dog to stop this habit.”	«ما می‌خوایم سگت این عادت رو ترک کنه.»
“Why don’t you put a bell around the dog’s neck?”	«چرا به گردن سگ زنگوله نمی‌ندازی؟»
“This way, we would hear your dog coming down the street.”	«اینطوری، وقتی سگت از خیابون رد می‌شه صداش رو می‌شنویم.»
John thought this was a great idea.	جان فکر کرد که این ایده‌ی خوبی است.
Now, people could stay away from the dog.	حالا، مردم می‌توانند از سگ دوری کنند.
It would not be able to bite anyone anymore.	دیگر نمی‌تواند کسی را گاز بگیرد.
The dog liked the bell, too.	سگ هم زنگوله را دوست داشت.
People looked at him when they heard his bell.	مردم وقتی صدای زنگش را می‌شنیدند به او نگاه کردند.
This made the dog very content.	این سگ را خیلی راضی می‌کرد.
He liked the sound the bell made when he walked.	او از صدای زنگوله که هنگام راه رفتنش بلند می‌شد، خوشش می‌آمد.
One day, John’s dog strolled through the village and met some other dogs.	روزی، سگ جان در روستا قدم می‌زد و چند سگ دیگر را ملاقات کرد.
He expected them to want a bell like his.	او انتظار داشت آن‌ها زنگوله‌ای مانند زنگوله‌ی او بخواهند.
But they laughed at his bell.	اما آن‌ها به زنگوله‌اش خندیدند.
They said the bell made people avoid him.	گفتند که این زنگوله باعث شده مردم از او دوری کنند.
John’s dog shook his head.	سگ جان سرش را تکان داد.
“No, they look at me because they like the bell.”	«نه، اونا به من نگاه می‌کنن چون زنگوله رو دوست دارن.»
The other dogs said, “You have the wrong idea about what makes you popular.”	سگ‌های دیگر گفتند: «تو درباره‌ی اینکه چی باعث شده محبوب بشی تصور اشتباهی داری.»
“Of course they like your bell.”	«البته که اونا زنگوله‌ی تو رو دوست دارن.»
“It tells them where you are so they can avoid you.”	«زنگوله به اونا می‌گه تو کجا هستی تا بتونن از تو دوری کنن.»
“You aren’t able to bite them anymore!”	«دیگه نمی‌تونی اونا رو گاز بگیری!»
“You see, being popular isn’t something positive when it’s for the wrong reason.”	«می‌بینی، محبوب بودن وقتی به دلیل اشتباهی باشد، چیز مثبتی نیست.»
