Many different cultures have had traditions about the dead.
بسیاری از فرهنگهای مختلف سنتهایی برای مردهها داشتند.
People in places like Ireland, China, Egypt and Mexico believed that souls needed food.
مردم در مکانهایی همچون ایرلند، چین، مصر و مکزیک باور داشتند که روحها به غذا نیاز دارند.
They thought the food nourished them on their journey from cemeteries to heaven.
فکر میکردند که غذا آنها را در سفرشان از قبرستانها به بهشت تغذیه میکند.
People had to put out good things for souls to eat.
مردم باید چیزهای خوبی برای روحها میگذاشتند تا بخورند.
However, if the food rotted or spoiled, the soul got mad.
هرچند، اگر غذا فاسد میشد، روح عصبانی میشد.
The wicked soul might curse the family and make them starve during the winter.
روح شرور شاید خانواده را نفرین میکرد و در طول زمستان آنها را از گرسنگی میکشت.
In other places, people begged for food on a holiday that remembers the souls of dead saints.
در جاهای دیگر، مردم برای غذا، در تعطیلاتی که روحهای بزرگان مرده را به یاد میآوردند، گدایی میکردند.
People wore disguises with hoods that covered their faces.
مردم لباسهای کلاهداری میپوشیدند که چهرهشان را میپوشاند.
If they did not get food, they played a trick on the home‘s owner.
اگر غذا نمیگرفتند، به صاحب خانه حقه میزدند.
For this reason, the activity is known as “trick–or treating.
به همین دلیل، این فعالیت به «حقه یا خوراکی» معروف است.
Shortly after people first began trick–or–treating, parents started sending their children to beg on that day.
مدتی پس از آغاز «حقه یا خوراکی»، پدرومادرها شروع به فرستادن بچههایشان برای گدایی در آن روز کردند.
Housewives gave the children food if they performed a song or a dance.
زنان خانهدار اگر بچهها آواز میخواندند یا میرقصیدند، به آنها غذا میدادند.
When people moved to America from all over the world, they brought this tradition with them.
وقتی مردم از سراسر جهان به آمریکا مهاجرت کردند، این سنت را با خود بردند.
Inhabitants of villages started trick–or–treating in the early 1900s.

In 1939 a children‘s publication acquainted the whole country with the tradition.

Today, trick–or-treaters do not beg for food, and they are not scared of souls.
امروزه، حقهیاخوراکیبازان برای غذا گدایی نمیکنند و از روحها نمیترسند.
They just enjoy the thrill of dressing up like creatures and getting candy.
آنها فقط از هیجان لباس پوشیدن همانند موجودات و گرفتن آبنبات لذت میبرند.
Ghosts and skeletons are favorite costumes.
روحها و اسکلتها لباسهای محبوب هستند.
But some children wear fancy disguises, like pirate costume.
اما بعضی از بچهها لباسهای جالبی همچون دزدان دریایی میپوشند.
They carry flashlights instead of fires.
آنها بهجای آتش از چراغقوه استفاده میکنند.
In some places, children still perform songs or riddles to get candy.
در بعضی از مکانها، بچهها هنوز هم برای گرفتن شکلات ترانه یا معما اجرا میکنند.
But most of the time, they just say “ Trick–or–Treat!
اما اکثر اوقات، فقط میگویند: «حقه یا خوراکی!
