Katie and Alice were twins.	کیتی و آلیس دوقلو بودند.
They were so alike that few people could tell them apart.	آن‌قدر شبیه هم بودند که افراد کمی می‌توانستند آن‌ها را از هم تشخیص دهند.
They were almost like seeing one person looking in a mirror.	تقریباً جوری بودند که انگار کسی به خودش در آینه نگاه می‌کند.
They even spoke in the same way as each other.	حتی مثل همدیگر صحبت می‌کردند.
They were best friends.	دوستان صمیمیِ هم بودند.
But the twins’ attributes were not all exactly the same.	اما همه‌ی ویژگی‌های دوقلوها دقیقاً یکسان نبود.
Alice preferred sport, and was a star athlete in soccer.	آلیس ورزش را ترجیح می‌داد، و بازیکن ستاره در فوتبال بود.
Katie preferred foreign languages and was bilingual in French.	کیتی زبان‌های خارجی را ترجیح می‌داد و فرانسوی هم بلد بود.
Katie decided to be a participant at a summer camp in France.	کیتی تصمیم گرفت که در کمپ تابستانی‌ای در فرانسه شرکت کند.
Alice wasn’t interested in the French language, so she didn’t go.	آلیس علاقه‌ای به زبان فرانسوی نداشت و به همین دلیل نرفت.
But she was angry that Katie wanted to spend the summer away from her.	اما از اینکه کیتی می‌خواست تابستان را دور از او بگذراند عصبانی بود.
Two months later, Katie returned.	دو ماه بعد، کیتی برگشت.
Alice dashed to the airport to greet her sister.	آلیس برای استقبال از خواهرش با سرعت به فرودگاه رفت.
But when Alice saw Katie, she was surprised.	اما وقتی آلیس کیتی را دید تعجب کرد.
Katie now spoke French, and she looked completely different!	کیتی حالا فرانسوی صحبت می‌کرد و ظاهرش کاملاً متفاوت بود!
She was wearing fashionable clothes, and she looked taller.	او لباس‌های شیک به تن داشت و قدبلندتر به نظر می‌رسید.
Alice felt very messy next to her.	آلیس در کنارش احساس آشفتگی زیادی می‌کرد.
She was just wearing an old t-shirt, and her hair looked untidy.	او فقط تی‌شرت قدیمی‌ای پوشیده بود و موهایش نامرتب به نظر می‌رسید.
When Alice asked Katie about France, Katie was vague and didn’t say much.	وقتی آلیس از کیتی درباره‌ی فرانسه سوال کرد، کیتی مبهم بود و حرف زیادی نزد.
It made Alice feel tense and filled her with disgust because in the past, they’d always told each other everything.	این آلیس را عصبی و پر از انزجار کرد چون در گذشته، آن‌ها همیشه همه‌چیز را به همدیگر می‌گفتند.
Now there was a huge gulf between them.	حالا فاصله‌ی زیادی بین آن‌ها بود.
Over the weeks, the sisters spoke even less.	طی هفته‌ها، خواهرها حتی کمتر صحبت می‌کردند.
Two months later, it was the twins’ birthday.	دو ماه بعد، روز تولد دوقلوها بود.
All their lives, they’d had a ritual.	در تمام زندگی‌شان آیینی برای خودشان داشتند.
Before their birthday, they’d talk all night long.	قبل از تولدشان، تمام شب صحبت می‌کردند.
That night, Alice came into Katie’s bedroom.	آن شب، آلیس وارد اتاق‌خواب کیتی شد.
“I’m sorry I haven’t spoken to you much lately,” Katie said.	کیتی گفت: «ببخشید که اخیراً زیاد باهات صحبت نکردم.»
“I understand. You have new friends now,” said Alice, angrily.	آلیس با عصبانیت گفت: «درک می‌کنم. تو الان دوست‌های جدیدی داری.»
Katie said, “My French friends don’t write much nowadays.”	کیتی گفت: «دوست‌های فرانسوی من این روزها زیاد برام نامه نمی‌نویسن.»
“For a while, I thought they were more exciting than my friends at home.”	«برای مدتی فکر می‌کردم اون‌ها از دوست‌های توی خونه‌م هیجان‌انگیزترن.»
“But I was wrong. You’re my sister, and you’ll always be my best friend.”	«اما اشتباه می‌کردم. تو خواهر من هستی، و همیشه بهترین دوستمی.»
Alice said, “I’m sorry, too. I wanted our relationship to stay the same forever.”	آلیس گفت: «من هم معذرت می‌خوام. می‌خواستم رابطه‌ی ما برای همیشه ثابت بمونه.»
“But it’s totally natural for twins to have different interests.”	«اما کاملاً طبیعیه که دوقلوها علایق متفاوت داشته باشن.»
“We can still be best friends without being together all the time.”	«ما می‌تونیم هنوز بهترین دوست‌های هم باشیم بدون اینکه تمام مدت کنار هم باشیم.»
